Somewhere between self-discovery and needing direct deposit.

🍳 BREAKFAST — Sno’ Abandons Her Dreams
Sno’ wakes up with dreams.
Big ones.
Creative ones.
The kind that require phrases like building something meaningful and conveniently never mention dental insurance.
Unfortunately, Sno’ has recently discovered a flaw in the Follow Your Dreams economic model:
The dreams are not paying rent.
Sno’ opens her laptop.
She stares at Inplease.
Inplease stares back.
Neither of them is particularly happy about this arrangement.
Sno’ applies for a job.
Then another.
Then..
God help her,
a third.
She closes the laptop.
“Well.”
She looks solemnly toward the middle distance.
“I guess I killed my dreams.”
It has been approximately 47 minutes.
Nobody has hired her.
Nobody has rejected her.
Her dreams are, medically speaking, completely fine.
Sno’ begins mourning them anyway.
🍔 LUNCH — Siri Diagnoses the Career Search
By lunch, Sno’ decides to check on one of the companies she applied to.
The company is called Neural Business.
This information proves surprisingly difficult to communicate to a telephone.
“Neural business,” Sno’ says.
Siri considers this.
NEURONS.
“No. Neural business.”
Siri tries again.
NEUROSIS.
Sno’ stares at the phone.
This was supposed to be a job search.
Her iPhone has turned it into a psychiatric intake.
Finally, Siri assumes the role of an unsolicited life coach.
Siri: “Perhaps this is a season of self-discovery.”
Sno’ has had enough.
Sno’:
“Perhaps this is a season of DIRECT DEPOSIT, SUSAN.”
Silence.
Even Siri knows when HR has been notified.
Sno’ does not need to find herself.
Sno’ knows exactly where she is.
She is in Illinois.
She has Wi-Fi.
She has a résumé.
And she would like somebody to exchange United States currency for labor.
Self-discovery can resume after payroll.
🍽️ DINNER — Sno’ Enters the Workforce
By dinner, the emails begin arriving.
APPLICATION RECEIVED.
Sno’ gasps.
Another:
THANK YOU FOR APPLYING.
Jesus Christ.
She is practically middle management.
A third company confirms receipt of her résumé.
Sno’ sits straighter.
She briefly considers purchasing slacks.
Then remembers she has specifically spent all day applying for remote jobs so she will never have to own slacks again.
The slacks are returned to the imaginary store.
Her phone buzzes again.
Sno’ checks immediately.
Nothing.
Seven minutes later:
Nothing.
Twelve minutes:
Still nothing.
Sno’ begins to suspect the American hiring system may not be prepared for her aggressive timeline.
She applied this morning.
Where is the pension?
Still, something has changed.
This morning, Sno’ was an entrepreneur with dreams.
Tonight, Sno’ is an entrepreneur with dreams who has been entered into several applicant-tracking systems.
This is apparently adulthood.
She looks at Siri.
Siri says nothing.
Smart.
Sno’ raises her imaginary glass.
“To finding ourselves.”
Pause.
“After direct deposit.”
MIC DROP.
Clinkedin marks it Open to Work.
